History Of Jazz
Dixie Land

Dixieland music came from New Orleans during the 1900's, when military bands were popular. There were only large bands at the time, and people looked for more convience for getting from place to place. These people formed smaller, Dixieland bands that consited of only 5 instruments.
1. Trumpet
2. Clarinet
3. Tuba
4. Trombone
5. Banjo/ Drums
When a trombonist moves the slide, it's called tailgating. This is called tal gating because when these bands whe out to play in the streets, and march, the tombonest had to sit in the bed of a pick-up truck. When the trombonist moved the slide, he would often hit the pick-up truck, so the tailgate had to be opened for them. Bands would meet in towns and play for people. The bands would have competitons on which one was better. These events were called "Cutting Heads" When dixieland bands would play, everyone would try to improvise, and this is called collective improvisation. This is extremly hard to do, because everyone has to be along the same lines or the music sounds weird. An important preformer was Joe "King" Oliver
